Keisha McDaniel
 I
LOVE YOU
From
the moment she was born in the summer of 1987,
Cedric and Joyce McDaniel knew their baby was special.
Keisha was three months premature with a fractured
skull, weighed slightly three and a half pounds, and
wasn't expected to live more than a week. If she did she,
doctors said, she would be severely brain damaged.

When
Keisha turned 9, kids began to chastise her.
They would say she looked like a boy. They would
call her a tomboy. "My baby would come home
crying, and that was when I had to do something,"
said Mrs. McDaniel. "I wasn't going to sit back and
see my baby get hurt. So she told young Keisha
to draw the kinds of clothes she wanted. So
Joyce got the clothes made, tailored like boys
clothes with a slightly more feminine friendly fit,
but in girls colors. She's designed overalls with a
zipper on the leg to transform to shorts, fleece,
baseball caps, t-shirts and baggy jeans.

Her
clothing line went through many changes and is
now holding the name Pretty Tomboy. Keisha's slogan
is "Be yourself or please everyone else." Keisha had to
be herself to go through everything she went through.
"I just want girls to know they don't have to change for anyone," says
Keisha. Her clothing line is now in the redesigning stage in 2003.

Six
years later, Keisha has won state
championships in soccer and basketball. Her
soccer teams also placed third in the regional.
Throughout the years she has won many
tournaments and games, which has also boosted
her confidence. Now she is currently attending
Desert Pines Magnet Program in Las Vegas,
studying computer programming and website
design. Keisha is an A and B student-athlete. She
was voted best offensive player on Desert Pines
J.V squad. Keisha is currently playing for the
N.F.C. Tabagators; she was recently picked MVP
in a tournament.
